One month to go...
Where you can find me before and after The Unbroken comes out!
Hi, everyone!
Things are ramping up on the way to The Unbroken’s release date! We’re just about a month away, March 23 for the US and March 25 for the UK! A month left for you to pre-order! That means I’m pretty busy planning appearances and writing essays and doing interviews—all while finishing up a draft of Magic of the Lost Book 2 to send to my editor. I also just finished up something very cool and sort of secret...but if you wanted to sign up for the Illumicrate newsletter or follow them on social media, you could see some cool stuff.
We’ve also had some really wonderful early praise of The Unbroken, including starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly and Library Journal, as well as lovely ones from Booklist, various bloggers, and FIYAH.
First! Some chances for FREE STUFF, including a free copy of The Unbroken!
- Samantha Shannon, author of Priory of the Orange Tree and The Mask Falling series is doing a generous giveaway of several amazing 2021 Debuts on her Instagram. You have to follow the authors’ Instas, and leave a comment about your most anticipated 2021 books. It ends March 15.
- Orbit is giving away a host of books by their Black authors for Black History Month! You can enter on Instagram; it ends Feb 28.
Here are a few places you can find me over the next month. These are events you can ‘attend’. It’ll give you a chance to get to know a little bit about me, about my process, and of course about The Unbroken and some of its influences.
February 24, 2 PM EST// 7 PM GMT: FanFiAddict is having me on for an interview! It will be live on YouTube, but also recorded. Feel free to subscribe to the YouTube page and check out some of the TBRcon they held earlier this year. Here’s David’s review of The Unbroken.
March 6, 3 PM EST// 8 PM GMT: I’ll be chatting with a few other queer fantasy writers like C.L. Polk (The Midnight Bargain), Eboni Dunbar (Stone and Steel), and Christopher Caldwell, thanks to Neon Hemlock Press and Portal Bookshop, who will sell you our books! Sign up for this event here.

March 16, 3 PM EDT// 7 PM GMT: I get to hang out with Tasha Suri, author of Empire of Sand and Realm of Ash and we’ll talk about our new books, colonialism and royalty, and really bad romantic decisions. Grab your tickets here! (For the record, The Jasmine Throne is amazing, and if you’re into the premise of The Unbroken you’ll want to pre-order this one, too.)

March 31, 4:30 PM EST// 9:30 PM GMT: I cannot WAIT to hang out with a couple of my favorite people, Al and Marguerite from the EA Podcast crew. You can check out their Twitch stream here!
I’ll also share links to the podcasts and webpage interviews as they go live! This includes places like The Fantasy Inn, DIY MFA, Worldbuilding for Masochists, and Fictitious Podcast. I’ll also have some essays hosted by Mary Robinette Kowal, John Scalzi, and Chuck Wendig (which still blows my mind, wow). I’ll also have an essay about war narratives in Fantasy Magazine and a new, free short story at Beneath Ceaseless Skies.
Here are some books you can read while you wait impatiently for The Unbroken. They’re either thematically similar, have similar tropes, or have the same vibes. (This is an affiliate link and I get a small kickback if you buy from my little Bookshop.org profile!)
One more reminder that my eligibility post for the Hugos, Nebulas, etc. is here.
Tl;dr: Lots of events coming up! Lots of places you can read interviews and essays about The Unbroken! Lots of things to read if you can’t wait for The Unbroken!
Take care for now! And remember that pre-orders help authors (especially debut authors) immensely and so does word of mouth! You can pre-order from US retailers or UK retailers, your local bookshops—even your library requests are a great help!
Stay sharp, my friends.
