Fortune’s Wake started as a game that I was playing to tell myself a story, and grew into an untamed wilderness of growing up and growing apart and what it means to leave home knowing you’ll come back to the same place again.

This book has been a whirlwind from its inception—written in a couple brief weeks, revised right before top surgery, and then the flurry of suddenly-it’s-August-what-do-you-mean-my-book-is-out-this-month. Thank you all for coming along for the ride and reading the various posts as it came to fruition.
I had a great chat with Hannah Kaner (Godkiller) and MJ Kuhn (Among Thieves) for the virtual launch yesterday, and the replay is up on Youtube. If you want to catch some of the other virtual events I’ve done, I’v put the links on the event page! The topics have varied pretty widely, from the origins of the novella and TTRPGs to the difference between writing novellas and epic fantasy trilogies, from queer mentorship to parenting/having parents.

Fortune’s Wake is also my first INDIE book—which is to say, published by a smaller press without the same distribution network and powerful marketing arm. Grimdark Magazine has been awesome and worked so hard to get the word out—they’ve hooked me up with bookish folks on Youtube to help with getting the word out there and platforming me for events, and my editorial and artistic team have been AMAZING (have you seen that cover?!) but this publication will truly rely on grassroots methods to be successful, so I’ll very explicitly ask for your help here: the more people who know about it and hear people talk positively about it, the better.
How can you help an author on/around/before/after/above/below/behind/between release day?
- Buy the book(s)! That's a pretty sure way. Whatever format, whatever sale deal. I love you to support your local indies, or less local indies that will ship to you. Requests at in-person shops will also show them there's a possible demand and they may order more. I also often use affiliate links here where possible, so those benefit me with a small kickback at no extra cost to you. And if you have a copy or see the book in the wild, tag me in a pic!

- Request it from your library! I love libraries.
- Leave a review on the site of your choosing! Anywhere, everywhere. Even the bathroom stall at the queer bar. Especially the bathroom stall at the queer bar. A 5-star review on Amazon or Goodreads, surprisingly, helps authors a lot.
- Tell a friend! Tell the anonymous hordes of the internet. Share this post with your followers—or any other links/posts/etc. Tell an enemy you like a little too much. Books make great gifts. Almost as good as swords.
- Buy tickets to events! Help me sell out arenas with big ass stages. Or at least, generous bookshops that have invited me to speak and virtual spaces, many of which are totally free!
I hope you have as much fun reading about Kova and Sayre and Fishbone as I had writing them. If you do, I’d also encourage you to play a round of Ironsworn solo or with your friends! You never know how a game might strike your inspiration.
